About Street Football

Footy for All and SportZone are working together to provide life changing opportunities, through football,  to marginalied and homeless individuals in the Wellington Region.

It started back in 2008 with Street Football Aotearoa setting up projects across the country and sending a team to the 2008 Melbourne Homeless World Cup. In 2009 SportZone joined SFA and helped run a National Homeless Championship with 4 teams from around the country with the aim of sending a NZ team to the 2010 Homeless World Cup in Rio - Brazil. Teams participating in the National tournament came from Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin and Christchurch. This first ever Street Football National Championship tournament for New Zealand was held on Queens Wharf, Wellington on a purpose built pitch supplied by SportZone. The event added to the occasion of the historic All Whites win over Bahrain in front of a sell out crowd in the Westpac Stadium.

Since then a second National Street Football Championship tournament has been held in Lower Hutt, in 2012, with the Wellington - Wellink team coming out on top. At the end of 2012 the batton was handed on to individual organisations to look after the various projects around the country and FACT welcomed the opportunity to take over the Wellington Street Football project.

The Homeless World Cup is an annual World Football event that gives hundreds of Street Football players, from over 70 Nations around the world, a massive opportunity to change their lives. FACT aims to join those nations in putting together a Street Football national team to represent New Zealand at future Homeless World Cup events.
